چکیده

Chemical protection/Ovarian follicle/Gamma irradiation Adult virgin female Swiss albino mice were irradiated with 2.5, 5 and 10 Gy of gamma radiation in the presence and absence of the drug MPG and changes in the ovarian follicular population were scored at various post irradiation intervals of 3 hours to 14 days. The results indicate that the drug has partially prevented the rapid reduction in the follicular number. Primordial follicles are protected to a greater extent than the growing and large follicles. The difference between the number of follicles of drug treated and non-drug treated animals is greater at low dose group.

Protection of mouse thymus against cobalt-60 radiation by 2-mercaptopropionylglycine (MPG).

Normal adult male Swiss albino mice, weighing 25 g on the average, were exposed to 500 R gamma rays from a Cobalt-60 source in the presence and absence of the chemical MPG or 2 mercaptopropionyiglycine and histological studies of thymus were conducted at various post irradiation intervals. It was found that MPG, when given 30 minutes before irradiation, protected the thymus tissue and caused an...

Depletion of Ovarian Primordial Follicles after Gamma Irradiation

Introduction:Artifical sourace of radiation have increased worldwide average annual exposure of mankind and could especially affect rapidly dividing cells in gonads. Since, radiation sensitivities of different components of primordial follicles, and the time required for their deplation have not been morphologically eatablished we decided to estimate the time required for depletion of primordi...

The protective effect of Sambucus ebulus against lung toxicity induced by gamma irradiation in mice

The aim of present study was to investigate the potential antioxidant and lung protective activities of Sambucus ebulus (SE) against toxicity induced by gamma irradiation. Hydroalcoholic extract of SE (20, 50 and 100 mg/kg) was studied for its lung protective activity. Phenol and flavonoid contents of SE were determined. Male C57 mice were divided into ten groups with five mice per group. Only ...

Amifostine has an inhibitory effect on the radiation-induced p53-branched cascade in the immature mouse ovary.

The organic thiophosphate, amifostine, is a promising pharmacological compound showing selective protection in many tissues against the toxic side-effects of radiation and cytotoxic drugs. The aim of the present study was to assess the radioprotective effects of amifostine on ovarian follicles. Three-week-old female mice, with or without pretreatment with amifostine, were irradiated with 6.42 G...

A comparative study of radioprotection by four Indian medicinal herbs against genotoxicity induced by sub-lethal gamma irradiation in Swiss albino mice

Background: Synthetic radio-protective agents like aminothiols are toxic and FDA approved agent amifostine is no exception. Some Ayurvedic herbs have shown radioprotective potential. This study was carried out to test and compare the radioprotective potential of Curcuma longa (CL) Tinospora cordifolia (TC), Zizyphus mauritiana (ZM) and Ocimum sanctum (OS) against 2Gy gamma irradiation ...
